Getting around in Pittsburgh, PA

Public Transportation

The public transportation service is provided by PAT (Port Authority), which operates bus, light rail, and incline service, the bus service covering much of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

The light rail, also known as ''The T'', connects the downtown area with the southern area of Pittsburgh. However, it does not cover many points of interest, and therefore, most of the visitors use the bus to find their way around, while staying in Pittsburgh.

The bus stops are easy to spot, being typically marked with a simple blue sign reading "Bus Stop" and listing route numbers and names.

The fares vary, depending on the zone you're in or the zone you're travelling to: the Base Fare is $2 and covers destinations within Zone 1, which encompasses the city limits and a few nearby suburbs, the fare for travelling within Zone 2 (covers the outlying suburbs) is $2.75, the Fare Free Zone, which covers the downtown core, offers free bus and trolley service, and for transfers there is an extra 75-cent charge, as well as during the "T" Rush Hour Surcharge, which is between 6 am and 9 am on inbound trips and from 4 to 6 pm, on outbound trips.

The city has Amtrak intercity rail service via the Capitol Limited and the Pennsylvanian at Pennsylvania Station, also known as Union Station.

Major Highways and Roads
