Sports & outdoor events

Asheville Citizen-Times Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk, September 18, 2010.

This fun and popular annual sporting event has been named after the city’s daily newspaper and has been designed to take runners through the less traveled areas (by car) in the city, in order to show off more of its natural beauty and architectural jewels.

Thus, the course of the race, which starts at the Citizen-Times headquarters building on O’Henry Street, takes runners on a scenic and picturesque journey, on an out-and-back counter-clockwise loop route through the city, passing by historic and gorgeous landmarks such as Grove Park Inn & Resort, Beaver Lake, including the campus of the University of North Carolina-Asheville, giving participants the chance to also do some sightseeing, along the way.

This year, races are presented in partnership with Mission Health System and proceeds will benefit the Youths Fit for Life and Energize programs of the YMCA and YWCA of Western North Carolina.
