The park's site was given by Queen Lili'uokalani, and lies southeast of downtown Hilo, much of the park consisting of Edo-style Japanese gardens, built in the early 1900s, which are considered to be the largest such gardens outside Japan.

 

The gardens contain Waihonu Pond as well as bridges, koi ponds, pagodas, statues, torii, and a Japanese teahouse.

 

>> Pacific Tsunami Museum Inc, dedicated to promote public tsunami education for the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Region, featuring exhibits that include tsunami survivors stories and memorabilia, a large portion of the museum being about oral history.

 

>> Lyman Museum, which first began as Lyman Mission House, originally built for New England missionaries David and Sarah Lyman in 1839. Nearly 100 eventful years later, in 1931, the Museum was established by their descendents.

 

Today, the restored Mission House is on the State and National Registers of Historic Places and may be visited by guided tour. The museum features a superb collection of artifacts, fine art, and natural history exhibits as well as an archives, special exhibitions and a gift shop.

 

>> Rainbow Falls Park, a wonderful, beyond-words natural beauty. The 80-foot Rainbow Falls is renowned for the rainbow formed from its mist many mornings. Legends say that the cave beneath the waterfall was the home of Hina, mother of the demigod Maui.

 

The most dramatic time to view these falls is after a Flowers at Rainbow Fallsrain, this is when the greatest volume of water flows over the falls.

 

Annual Events

The Annual Merrie Monarch Festival is the signature annual event of Hilo and it is also the city's most renowned annual event.

 

The week-long festival, which takes place every year, after Easter, features an internationally acclaimed hula competition, crafts fairs, an art show, music concerts, seminars, hula shows, and a grand parade through Hilo town.
