WHAT TO DO AND SEE IN TUSCALOOSA

Westervelt-Warner Museum of American Art - located at 8316 Mountbatten Road and open to public from Tuesday to Sunday, the museum houses over 500 works of American art from 1775 to present times, but also furniture, and decorative arts specific to the period between the late 18th and the early 20th century.

 

Murphy African-American Museum - located at 2601 Bryant Dr. & Lurleen Wallace Blvd. S., the museum was built in 1920 and it exhibits different and various art and artifacts of African art and local history.

 

Alabama Museum of Natural History - located on UA campus, in Smith Hall and open to public from Monday to Saturday, the Alabama Museum of Natural History is one of the finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture in the region. There are many exhibits and displays from the Age of Dinosaurs,the Coal Age, and the Ice Age, as well as paleontology, ethnology, history, and photography.

 

Bama Theatre - the building dates from 1938, when its construction was finished for Tuscaloosa inhabitants. At that time, the theatre was designed as a community movie house and it was actually the only place with AC in that period. Bama Theatre's house is a reproduction of the courtyard of the Davanzati Palace of Florence, in Italy, decorated in the Spanish style and complete with balconies and ironwork.

 

Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion - located at 1305 Greensboro Ave., near UA campus, the mansion now houses Tuscaloosa Convention and Visitors Bureau. The building was constructed between 1859-1862 by Robert Jemison, Jr., a planter and business man, who tried to build a `state of the art` home for his family. The mansion can be visited for free both individually and in groups from Monday - Friday.

 

Lake Lurleen State Park - it is located on a 250-acre lake, offering many outdoor activities for its visitors. The park was named after the wife of Governor George C. Wallace, Mrs. Lurleen Wallace, who had a great contribution on Alabama State Parks.
