Marshall is considered to be one of the most vibrant and progressive cities in southwestern Minnesota, and has been selected as one of ''The Best Small Towns in America'' in 1993, 1995 and 2002.

Marshall is also a wonderful place to visit, offering attractions that satisfy all preferences, ranging from outdoor recreational areas to interesting museums and art galleries.

Among Marshall's most popular attractions, there are:

Lyon County Museum, located downtown Marshall, where visitors can explore Lyon County's rich and varied history that dates back to its earliest known inhabitants, the Sisseton branch of the Dakota Sioux nation. The center piece of the museum's collection is the Schwan's Dairy Lunch Counter, a real 1950's ice cream and soda fountain counter. The Prairie Diorama, Prairie Schooner and the 1872 log cabin show how settlers traveled to the prairie and erected their first homes.

Museum-Natural History, on SMSU campus, focused on the study of native Minnesota plants and animals from the prehistoric to the present day. The facility presents hands-on ecology exhibits, live animal displays, and a self-contained slide show with narration that changes every several months. Traveling exhibits from the Science Museum of Minnesota are also featured at various times.

Marshall Aquatic Center, with a 190 foot water slide and three pools to entertain every age. Plunge into the diving well, swim laps or just enjoy a leisurely dip with friends. The aquatic center also features a playground area filled with sand volleyball, for the enjoyment of the little ones.

Annual Events

The Lyon County Fair, which happens in August, and the Festival of Kites, celebrated in July, are Marshall's most popular annual events. Both celebrations offer enthusiasts plenty of exciting entertainment, including music, delicious food, a parade, fireworks shows and much, much more.
