Ames has a municipal airport located just 1 mile southeast of the city, but the closest major airport is Des Moines International Airport, located in Des Moines, at a distance of 35 miles from the city center of Ames, IA.
Ames is the only city in the state, with a population larger than 50 000, that does not have a state highway serving it, being served by US Highway 30 and I-35. Throughout the city, the public transportation service is provided by a transit system called CyRide, funded by the City of Ames, ISU and the ISU Government of the Student Body. The Chicago and North Western Transportation Company twin mainline also offers transportation services, running east and west, south of downtown Ames, bisecting it. The Union Pacific operates 60-70 trains a day, providing rail service throughout Ames, fact which sometimes causes traffic delays.
Previous visitors suggest that the best way to get around Ames is a rental car, especially if you're visiting Ames for the first time and you're not familiar with the public transportation services. Be sure to grab a local map, though, so you don't end up someplace else, than your desired destination.
Of course, to easily find your way around, you can choose to use the taxi services. However, taking a cab is a great idea, only if you're not on a budget and you don't need to travel far from your hotel, because there are not exactly cheap.
