Getting around in Georgetown, DC

Perhaps the best way to get around in Georgetown is by bus, especially if you're on a budget during your stay in the city. The Georgetown Metro Connection bus system provides travel service between Georgetown and Dupont Circle Metro stations, for just $1, and the DC Circulator provides access to the city's eastern M Street corridor, including most of Wisconsin Avenue, also having a direct route to Union Station ($1).

 

As for driving, let's just say you shouldn't! According to previous visitors, the traffic is constantly interrupted by the lights making it infernal. If you don't want to ruin your day, think twice before getting behind the wheel, especially during rush hour.

 

It's easier for Georgetown students to get around in the city, because there is a free shuttle available for them that runs regularly between the university and Dupont Circle (Red Line), Rosslyn (Blue Lines), 2233 Wisconsin Avenue NW (near GU Tax Office), North Arlington (Arlington Loop) and the Georgetown Law Center, in downtown DC, near Union Station.

 

The closest Metro Bus Routes to Georgetown campus are: G2, D1-D3, D4, D5, D6 and 38B. The nearest Metro stops to campus are in Rosslyn (Blue and Orange Lines) and Dupont Circle (Red Line). The trains run from 5 am to midnight, and from 7am on Saturdays and Sundays, offering an extended service, until 3 am, on Fridays and Saturdays. The fares range from $1.45 to $4.60, depending on the time of day and distance.

From Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport:

 

- Head north toward Aviation Cir/Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Access Road and continue straight onto Aviation Cir/Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Access Road.

 

- Take the ramp onto George Washington Memorial Pkwy., and then take the exit onto I-395 N toward Washington.

 

- Take exit 6 for I-395 N/C St SW toward D St NW/U.S. Senate/U.S. Capitol the House and merge onto I-395 N (signs for I-395 N/D St NW/New York Ave).

 

- Turn right at New York Ave NW and exit onto Mt Olivet Rd NE, continuing straight onto Brentwood Rd NE, and then make a slight right at Rhode Island Ave NE/US-1 N. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Rhode Island Ave/US-1 N.

 

- Take the I-95 N/Beltway ramp to I-495 N/Baltimore/Silver Spring and merge onto I-495 W/I-95 N. Take the exit onto I-95 N and then take the I-295/Delaware Turnpike exit toward Del Mem Br/NJ-Ny.

 

- Take exit 5 for DE-141 N toward Newport. Keep left at the fork to continue toward Delaware Turnpike/I-295 N and merge onto Delaware Turnpike/I-295 N.

 

- Make a slight left at US-40 E and continue onto New Jersey Turnpike N. Continue onto I-95 N and take the exit onto I-95 N.

 

- Take exit 16E toward Lincoln Tunnel/NJ-3. Keep left at the fork, and follow the signs for N J 3/Secaucus, and then merge onto NJ-495 E.

 

- Continue onto NY-495 E. Take the exit toward 42 St/I-495 E/New York 9A and make a right turn at W 40th St. Turn left at 6th Ave/Avenue of the Americas and then make a right at W 44th St. Take the 1st right onto 5th Ave.
