Sports & outdoor events

The list of popular annual sporting events in Utah includes the Utah Valley Marathon, commonly known as UVM, which is an annual foot-race marathon, taking place in Northern Utah and scheduled on the 2nd Saturday of June. The race was started in 2008 by Jeremiah West and Hyrum Oaks, with only 120 registered runners.

All profits go to the Children with Cancer Christmas Foundation charity, and as of 2010, the race also benefits the Deseret International.

The event features a 26-mile marathon course through Wasatch and Utah Counties, a 13.1-mile half marathon, which begins in Provo Canyon, as well as a 5k course that begins west of the Provo Towne Centre mall and continues through the south area of Provo.

Festivals

There are various celebrations throughout the year, happening all over Utah. The list of annual Utah festivals and fairs includes the Dickens Festival (December), taking place in Saint George, located at a distance of approximately 4 hours from Provo, by car, described by visitors as a `unique and unusual entertainment and shopping experience`, and as a fun-filled celebration which takes people back in time, in the 19th century.

There is also the Rocky Mountain Christmas Fest, happening in Farmington, UT, (1 hour from Provo, by car), and the Holly Faire, which takes place in Wellsville, UT (2 hours from Provo, by car), both scheduled in December, and both very popular among visitors and locals, as well.

Nightlife

Due to the fact that the community in Provo, UT is a Mormon one, the Mormons being very peaceful and settled people, there isn't really a thriving nightlife scene going on here. In fact, people say that the city does not have a nightlife scene, at all.

There are a few great restaurants where people can enjoy a relaxing dinner with friends, as well as a few bars, maybe a couple of dancing clubs, but the list of the most popular nightspots in Provo kind of ends here.

The bars and clubs are often filled with students or people, who are visiting Provo, but as far as concerning the locals, they rather prefer to spend a relaxing evening at home with their family than go out partying.

Of course, there are some exceptions, and not all of them are like that, according to a few previous visitors!
